Manhoru de Thomas Couderc rassemble une collection de plaques d’égout japonaises.
Capturé par l’auteur lors d’un voyage au Japon, ou glané plus tard sur internet, ce corpus inédit invite à découvrir un art subtil souvent ignoré en Europe, et particulièrement en France où les accès aux égouts sont contraints par des plaques de fonte standardisées aux motifs tristement et exclusivement fonctionnels.
Au Japon, les plaques d’égout (manhorukaba en japonais) jouent au signe et nous racontent des histoires. Fruit d’une décision politique singulière, ces plaques déclinent un récit territorial superlatif : passé glorieux ou présent performant, mascottes et légendes locales, faune, flore ou monuments remarquables…
Mis en commun pour la première fois dans un unique recueil, ces objets banals du quotidien révèlent à eux-seuls l’univers graphique exceptionnel de l’archipel nippon.

Manhoru by Thomas Couderc brings together a collection of Japanese manhole covers. Captured by the author during a trip to Japan, or gleaned later on the internet, this unpublished body of work invites you to discover a subtle art often overlooked in Europe, and particularly in France where access to the sewers is constrained by cast iron plates standardized with sadly and exclusively functional patterns.
In Japan, manhorukaba (in Japanese) plays at the sign and tells us stories. The result of a singular political decision, these plaques offer a superlative territorial story: glorious past or successful present, local mascots and legends, remarkable flora, fauna or monuments …
Brought together for the first time in a single collection, these banal everyday objects alone reveal the exceptional graphic universe of the Japanese archipelago.
